An escape hood is the piece of equipment nobody expects to use and everybody needs to have specified correctly. It is bought once, stored for years, and then either works in the ninety seconds that matter or does not.

This guide covers what escape equipment is for, how to match it to the hazard, the storage problem that UAE heat creates, and the one situation where filtering escape hoods provide no protection at all.

What is an escape hood?

An escape hood is single-use emergency respiratory protection. It provides a defined number of minutes of breathable air — enough to move from a hazard to a safe area — and is discarded once deployed.

It is not working equipment. This distinction is the source of most specification errors:

A worker who needs respiratory protection to do their job needs a half mask or full face mask with the right filter. An escape hood is for the moment the job stops and leaving becomes the priority.

Where is escape equipment needed?

Anywhere a person could be cut off from an exit by smoke or gas:

  • Oil, gas and petrochemical facilities — hydrogen sulphide and hydrocarbon release
  • Chemical processing and bulk storage
  • Confined space entry — as secondary escape provision alongside the primary plan
  • Marine and offshore
  • Tunnels and underground works
  • High-rise buildings — smoke escape for occupants of upper floors and plant rooms
  • Control rooms and manned remote posts in industrial facilities
  • Laboratories handling volatile or toxic substances

What hazard does the hood need to handle?

Escape hoods are hazard-specific. A smoke escape hood is not a gas escape hood, and neither works in an oxygen-deficient space.

The oxygen problem

This is the single most important thing to understand about filtering escape equipment, and it is regularly missed.

A filter cleans air. It cannot create oxygen.

In an oxygen-deficient atmosphere — generally taken as below about 19.5% — a filtering escape hood provides no protection whatsoever. The wearer will feel protected, because the hood is on and they are breathing, and they will lose consciousness anyway.

Oxygen deficiency occurs in confined spaces, in spaces where an inert gas has displaced air, in tanks and vessels, and in some fire scenarios where combustion has consumed the available oxygen.

Where oxygen deficiency is possible, escape provision must be self-contained or supplied-air. This is a fundamentally different — and more expensive — category of equipment, and there is no filtering shortcut. Establish the atmosphere type before specifying anything.

How long does an escape hood provide protection?

Manufacturers state a rated protection duration, typically measured in minutes. That figure is the design basis for the escape, not a spare margin.

Specify against the actual escape route, not the rated figure:

  • How far is it from the furthest work position to a safe area?
  • How long does that take walking, in poor visibility, with restricted breathing, in a stressful situation — not at a normal pace on a clear day?
  • Are there stairs, ladders or confined sections that slow movement?
  • What if the primary route is blocked and the secondary route is used?

Time the walk. It is a twenty-minute exercise that turns a guess into a specification, and it frequently shows that the escape time assumed in the plan is optimistic.

Shelf life and the UAE storage problem

Sealed escape hoods have a stated shelf life, usually several years from the date of manufacture — but only when stored within the manufacturer’s specified temperature and humidity range.

That condition is the problem here. Escape equipment is normally stored where it will be needed, which on many UAE facilities means:

  • Wall cabinets in unconditioned plant rooms
  • Site containers that reach 60°C or more in summer
  • Outdoor mounting points in direct sun
  • Vehicle-mounted storage

Sustained heat above the specified range degrades seals, adhesives and filter media, and it does so without visible change to the sealed packaging. A hood that looks perfectly serviceable may be well outside its performance envelope.

Practical measures:

  • Check the manufacturer’s storage temperature range against the actual conditions at the storage point — measure it in July, not in January
  • Move storage into conditioned space where possible, without compromising accessibility
  • Shorten the replacement interval where storage conditions cannot be controlled
  • Record the expiry date on the cabinet, not just on the unit — it is far more likely to be seen during routine inspection

Inspection and management

Escape equipment fails silently because nobody uses it. A monthly walk-round should confirm:

  • The unit is present — units get borrowed, moved and not returned
  • The seal or tamper indicator is intact
  • The expiry date has not passed
  • The packaging is undamaged — no cracks, punctures or crushing
  • Access is unobstructed — cabinets get blocked by stored material within weeks of installation
  • Signage is visible and legible

And the part most often skipped: workers must know where the hoods are and how to don them. Reading an instruction leaflet during a gas release is not a plan. Practical donning drills with a training unit, repeated at induction and periodically thereafter, are what make the equipment work.

Escape hoods are not the only answer

For facilities where personnel work in a known respiratory hazard for extended periods, powered air-purifying respirators change the calculation. Units such as the Sundström SR 500 EX — ATEX-rated for explosive atmospheres — remove breathing resistance and deliver a cooling airflow, which matters enormously in UAE summer conditions where a negative-pressure respirator adds directly to heat stress.

These are working equipment, not escape equipment. A complete respiratory programme usually needs both, plus the consumables and spares to keep the working equipment in service.

Yes — most escape hoods use a neck seal rather than a face seal specifically so they can be donned quickly over facial hair and glasses. This is a deliberate difference from working respirators, which need a clean-shaven face seal and individual fit testing.

Does an escape hood need fit testing?

No. Escape hoods with neck seals are designed for universal fit and do not require individual fit testing. Tight-fitting working respirators — half and full face masks — do require it.

How often should escape hoods be inspected?

Monthly is a reasonable interval for a visual check: presence, intact seal, expiry date, undamaged packaging and unobstructed access. In harsh storage conditions, inspect more frequently.

Can one escape hood cover every hazard on a site?

A combined ABEK with a particle stage covers a wide range of gases and particulates, which is why it is commonly specified where the release scenario is uncertain. But no filtering hood covers oxygen deficiency, and some specific hazards need dedicated filter types. Specify against the assessed hazards, not against convenience.
